When I was young I didn't know
why Grandpa was such an angry man.
Coke in hand, he'd tell me about
all those things he didn't understand.
In his glass ice was clinkin',
while he espoused what he was thinkin'.
We'd watch the cars drive slowly by
as the sun went down and he told me why...

The Beatles were the cause
of the conflict in Vietnam.
And all those things those talking heads
on the television had to say were wrong.

And I swore he had a lot to learn
about the modern world.
But it was I who had a lot to learn,
about the modern world
and the dangers of convenience
and indulgence
Oh, well, it was I
who had a lot to learn.

Now I think about the values he instilled in me
and I swear that I can smell
the fire and the brimstone in this
modern terrestrial hell.
Now I'm a boy who gets angry about
all those things he doesn't understand.
I've realized that I'm just another
cranky old man.

And I think technology is the downfall
of common courtesy.
The rottenness and stupidity of kids today
is plain to see.

And I swear they have a lot to learn
about the modern world.
But it is I who has a lot to learn
about the modern world
and the dangers of furies
and worries
of cranky old men
who have a lot to learn.

until I do.
